How fancy Unicode fonts work, and why they sometimes break

Why does 𝓐 work on Instagram when you never installed a font? The answer is a quiet global standard called Unicode.

Font vs character: the key difference

When you change the font in a document, the letter "A" stays the letter "A". Only its drawing changes. Paste it into a chat and the font is gone.

Fancy letters work differently: the generator changes the character itself. "A" becomes "𝐀", a different character with a different code. That is why the style survives copy and paste.

What Unicode is

Unicode is the international standard that gives a number to every character in every writing system. It includes more than 150,000 characters: Latin letters, Chinese characters, emojis, math symbols and much more.

CharacterUnicode codeOfficial name
AU+0041Latin Capital Letter A
𝐀U+1D400Mathematical Bold Capital A
𝒜U+1D49CMathematical Script Capital A
𝔄U+1D504Mathematical Fraktur Capital A
ⒶU+24B6Circled Latin Capital Letter A

Where fancy letters come from

Most come from three places in Unicode:

  1. Mathematical alphabets, made for formulas, such as bold 𝐯 for vectors. They give us bold, italic, script, gothic and double-struck.
  2. Circled and squared letters, made for labeling and numbering.
  3. Letters from other scripts, such as Cherokee or Greek, that happen to look like Latin letters.

How accents survive

Unicode has combining marks: accents that attach to the character before them. "é" can be one character or "e" plus "◌́". Letras Bonitas Art separates the accent, styles the letter, then puts the accent back. That is how "Café" becomes 𝐂𝐚𝐟𝐞́.

The same marks create effects like strikethrough (S̶) and glitch text, which stacks many marks on one letter.

Why you sometimes see boxes

Unicode defines the code; the fonts on each device do the drawing. If no font on a phone has a drawing for that character, you get an empty box (☐), nicknamed "tofu".

It happens more often with:

  • Old phones and outdated systems.
  • Rare characters from historic scripts.
  • Brand-new emojis.

Search engines and social apps usually treat 𝐚𝐫𝐭 and "art" as different text. Keep keywords, hashtags and usernames plain. The guide fancy text and accessibility explains how to balance style and reach.

Questions artists ask

Do I need to install fonts to use fancy letters?

No. They are Unicode characters your device can already display in most cases.

Why don’t fancy letters work on some sites?

Some fields, like usernames and passwords, only accept basic characters.

Is Unicode the same as emoji?

Emojis are part of Unicode, but Unicode is much bigger, covering every writing system and thousands of symbols.
